Honest Watch Tracking

Honest Watch Tracking counts only seconds where the video is the active tab and the window has focus. Hover previews and background tabs are excluded.

Honest Watch Tracking is the core measurement methodology in Gazenest. It determines how watch time is counted, and it works differently from YouTube's own measurement.

What most tools count: most YouTube trackers and YouTube's own internal metrics count watch time based on the video being open in a tab. A video playing in a background tab, a tab you have muted while doing other work, or a thumbnail hover preview that autoplays -- all of these register as watch time in naive implementations.

What Gazenest counts: a second of watch time is recorded only if the YouTube tab is the active tab, the browser window has focus, and the video is not in hover-preview mode. All three conditions must be true simultaneously.

Why this matters: the practical result is that Gazenest numbers are almost always lower than YouTube's own history estimates. If YouTube's built-in history reports three hours last week, Gazenest may show two hours and twenty minutes of honest watch time. The gap is not a bug -- it is the difference between "the YouTube tab was open" and "you were actually watching the YouTube tab."

Hover previews alone can add 15-20% to naive watch time counts for heavy homepage users. Background tab audio adds more. For anyone trying to understand real attention consumption rather than proximity to a screen, these exclusions are the difference between useful data and inflated data.
